27-year old James started his career in the youth ranks at Wimbledon, before being spotted by Arsenal in 2004.

He was despatched on loan to Nottingham Forest, then joined Exeter on a permanent deal ahead of their League One campaign of 2009/10. A central midfielder, James progressed to make 127 appearances for the Devon side, prior to his May 2012 switch to Stevenage.

He played 45 games during the 2012/13 season at Broadhall Way, scored six goals and picked up several Player of the Year awards. Moving north to join St. Johnstone on a temporary deal the following year, he appeared 17 times in the Scottish Premier League and also won a 2014 Scottish Cup winners medal after the Saints 2-0 success over Dundee United.

He then accepted the offer of a contract with Portsmouth, played 38 games, but was loaned to Dagenham in October 2015. Following his release from Pompey in January last year, James was snapped up by the U’s on a deal to the end of the campaign and, after a successful spell, extended that agreement for a further year until June 2017. He was also named Vice-Captain prior to start of this season.
