Harris: Demanding more

27 January 2024

Cambridge United Head Coach, Neil Harris was pleased with much of his team's performance against Burton Albion but rued a lack of cutting edge at the top of the pitch as United were held to a stalemate...

Despite being on top for much of the game and the opposition going down to ten men, the U's struggled to break down a dogged Burton Albion who held on for a share of the spoils.

Neil Harris spoke to the media after the match to discuss the encounter.

On a good performance but missing the cutting edge...

"We controlled the game. We knew they would bring a real physical presence and be really strong on the counter attack and set plays but they didn't really cause us a problem. I think Jack touched the ball four or five times with his hands in the game. So it was a really strong defensive performance from us.

"At the top end of the pitch, for large parts, we were good in the build up play. We moved the ball really well, identified space, caused them lots of problems to get to the final third but we didn't have that moment of quality, that is probably my frustration. That key moment we were just missing."

On Burton's defensive resilience...

"Burton will be pleased with a point. They came to get a point and they ask a lot of questions of you in terms of asking you to break them down. They ran Derby close and got beat in injury time and then steamrolled Charlton last week at home, so we knew it would be an tough fixture.

"When they went to ten men you think straight away, we aren't going to concede but it's making sure we have got quality at the other end. They dug in and the mindset becomes a 'they shall not pass' attitude and credit to them, they had it and blocked everything we threw at them, but still, it's my right to demand more from the group."

On next week's transfer activity...

"We just missed out on a couple and we know we need to get a couple of deals done this week. We know that and we are doing everything we can.

The lads are great, they give everything to the football club and the supporters but they just need a little bit of support so if we can get a couple of deals over the line and we will look a lot healthier squad going into next Saturday."
