Harris: Really proud of my players

17 February 2024

Neil Harris was glad to send home the travelling U's supporters happy on Saturday evening following a thoroughly impressive 4-0 victory over Carlisle...

After Sullay Kaikai's opener in the first half, United turned it on after the break, scoring a further three times without reply, to earn the Club's biggest league win of the season.

The U's Head Coach discussed the victory with the media after the final whistle.

  • On seeing out a tough opening to the game…

"We knew they would come out fast and we had to stand strong for 10 minutes, but we made sure that we forced turnover after turnover today.

"That’s where you rely on your experience and moments of defensive quality to see that through but as soon as the first goal goes in, that was the game.

"We knew the first goal was going to be key and to get that, it knocked the stuffing out of the stadium and we grew in confidence after that."

  • On a supreme attacking display…

"Really proud of my players performance. The only disappointment for the attacking players was that they haven’t scored more goals between them. I thought the subs made a really good impact and we got some good minutes into lads by being so comfortably in-front. Our shape was very, very impressive today, we countered with real quality and pace and executed some moments really well.

"I spoke to the attacking players during the week after Tuesday that when we do go forward, let’s really go with belief, pace and the confidence that we are going to take the ball into the penalty area and an individual is going to be the one that finishes the move off.

"I thought too many times we don’t quite have that self-belief that we are going to put the ball in the net but today we did that."

  • On rewarding the travelling supporters…

"What a great occasion for them – I am really pleased for them. We win and lose as a football club and I know that we have got a great culture and environment, and we don’t take that for granted. I thank the fans for their mileage that has been clocked up [this week] and I am pleased they have gone home happy."

  • On an exciting week ahead at home…

"Really tough week in-front but we have enjoyed today and earned the right to enjoy the next four games. On our day we are as good as anybody and we have got to remember that and take that confidence from today.

"We have got a big, big challenge on Tuesday night against a very talented Bolton side and we will enjoy it."
