U's become Fair Game Founding Member

24 May 2021

Cambridge United is one of six founding Clubs of ‘Fair Game’, a group of Football Clubs who are striving to change the game for good amidst the crisis that has devastated many clubs and left countless others on the brink...

Fair Game wants to see football governed with fairness, openness and transparency at its core. The group are working together to make representations to the Government’s review of football chaired by Tracy Crouch MP.

The U’s are joined by fellow founders Newport County, Exeter City, Grimsby Town, Luton Town and AFC Wimbledon, with AFC Bury and Accrington Stanley newly signed up and many more set to join.

The Fair Game Clubs are committed to the following four key principles and are determined to improve the governance of our national game for the wider interests of football.

  • Sustainability - A financial structure that is fairer and more responsible
  • Integrity - Greater recognition of and protections for current competitions
  • Independent Regulation - Regulation that rewards and encourages good management
  • Community - Embedded and structured fan engagement at all clubs

CEO Ian Mather said, “The structure of football is in desperate need of reform. The game is the richest sport in the UK yet we continue to see clubs post eye watering losses leading to the collapse of many. As we emerge from the pandemic there is an opportunity to reset how football operates. We should not waste this chance and we are keen to work with other like-minded clubs to help shape the organisation of the sport which gives so much joy to so many communities."
