CAMBRIDGE UNITED STAFF, PLAYERS AND MENTAL HEALTH AMBASSADORS UNITE FOR IMPORTANT MESSAGE

Think about your physical and mental fitness

27 March 2020

In times of isolation, we may lose social connections, lose routine, and lose some of our ability to do the things we take for granted, but it is important you continue to look after both physical and mental fitness.

Cambridge United's Head Coach Mark Bonner, First Team players and Mental Health Ambassadors have United to deliver a key message and provide tips on the best way to take good care of your mind and body, whilst also remaining safe during these challenging times.

At Cambridge United, we pride ourselves in being a mentally healthy football club, so here are some tips to keep yourself and those around you ‘mentally healthy’.

Tip 1) Use technology. – In isolation we may find it more difficult than usual to interact with others. Use Facetime, Whatsapp Video Call, Skype or Zoom to stay connected to those close to you.

Tip 2) Check in regularly. Speak to the people we care for and check they are OK. A text or short phone call can mean a great deal.

Tip 3) Help those in need in anyway you can. Research proves that doing something kind for somebody else can impact both their and our own wellbeing in a positive way. Stay safe, but find ways to help!

Tip 4) Exercise! Even in our homes we can find ways to keep ourselves active. You don’t have to go for a run like me, but it may just be something simple like a stroll around the garden, or a few… bicep curls, leg raises, etc.

Tip 5) Gratitude. Compile a list of everything we are grateful for. At times like this it’s important to think of all the great things we already have in our lives.

Tip 6) Try something new. Our brain is energised when we learn.. use this time to learn a new language or instrument, or read the book you’ve wanted to read for months!

And don’t forget to follow the government advice in order to stay safe:

  • Wash your hands more often than usual, using soap and hot water for 20 seconds – particularly after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.
  • When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve or a tissue – if using tissues dispose of them immediately, then wash your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces you may use regularly to prevent the virus spreading.
  • In terms of social interaction, avoid all contact with someone displaying symptoms of Coronavirus. Symptoms include a high temperature, or a new or persistent cough – and void any unnecessary travel and large gatherings.
  • Finally and most importantly, stay at home! Only go outside for essential food shopping, one form of exercise per day, or for work, where this absolutely cannot be done from home. And do not socialise with other people from outside of your household.

Follow these recommendations, and support us all in our efforts to tackle the coronavirus.
