Walking Football Marches On!

5 November 2019

The clue’s in the name with ‘Walking’ Football: there’s no running allowed! Taking that aspect of football out of the game allows over 50’s to keep active and get back involved playing the beautiful game! And we’re delighted to say that the sessions have continued to grow and grow… having to split into two separate games on many occasions.

From 6th November, the intermediate sessions will be back at Kelsey Kerridge Leisure Centre for the next few colder months. We are extremely grateful to Better Gym for continuing to support older people keeping fit!

The ‘Ambling Amber Army’, as the group is known, has gone from strength to strength over the last few years and there are now two walking football sessions: beginner and intermediate. We also have our SuperVets session for over 50’s where normal rules apply and running/jogging is permitted!

Walking Football is organised by Phil Mullen, the Disability Sports Officer for Cambridge United Community Trust. He said: 'I really enjoy coaching the walking football sessions. It’s fantastic to see players developing not only from a physical point of view i.e learning new football skills and improving health & fitness, But also from a mental health and wellbeing side. It’s great to see players growing in confidence and forming new friendships.'

Andrew Stephen is another attendee who is full of praise for the sessions. He said: "It is a very supportive environment and it’s very good for your health too."

Derek Wall is another attendee at Walking Football and the oldest too! When asked about his experiences, he said that the best part of the group is "meeting up with other people" and that "you often find that there’s connections."

Lesley Tubb, "It's just a great thing to do; it keeps you fit, it gets you moving and there's lots of camaraderie."

Our Walking Football sessions are mixed-gender and open to all over 50s, irrespective of ability or experience. Come along and see what the fuss is all about! Head to cuctrust.co.uk to find out more.
