PROGRAMME PREVIEW | EXETER CITY (FA CUP) – ELLIOTT WARD FEATURE

8 November 2019

Take a sneak peek at this weekend’s Amber Rambler and the player feature with U’s defender Elliott Ward!

The Amber Rambler will be available to buy around the ground, from the CFU Van, and in the club shop for just £3. Tickets for tomorrow’s fixture are still available online here, and will also be available in the ticket office on match day until kick off at 3:00pm.

Programme preview:

Ward indisputably provided the game defining moment of last Saturday’s show at the Abbey, with his cross field pass six minutes from time picking out Sam Smith with missile like precision for the striker to bury United’s equaliser and set the game up for a home winner. He recalls the moment as simply the right pass at the right time.

He said: “In the second half we were probably a little guilty of returning the ball to Crawley too easily. I remember getting myself into a slight bit of danger just before I received the ball, and quickly got the call of ‘man on’ so had to get away from him.

“I was glad to side step the oncoming man and Sam then made a diagonal run and we probably hadn’t played that pass enough in the game up to that point, because we’d been wide, played through ball and when Reggie is on the pitch you want to get him on the ball because he’s a good playmaker.

“But it was just the right time to play that particular pass, it was the right run and shot from Sam. We got the goal and it was game on from there and you obviously saw what happened.”

Consistency, is the word that Ward states everyone is looking to chase and across his 16 year professional career, has been the aspect that all successful teams and players have been able to achieve.

“The improved home record is something we can build on and that wasn’t the case at the beginning of the season, where the away form was better. That has swapped more recently and it’s about how we can stabilise that.

“Consistency is the word that we always say. It’s the hardest thing to do in football. Looking at my own performances, the week before last at Northampton was probably my worst performance for Cambridge United and that meant I then had a point to prove, and I hope that an improved performance came across to the fans.

“So that’s the way it is and therefore as a team it means we have to stay in games so that we can make the most of our firepower and the good squad of players who are all pushing each other.”
