CAMBRIDGE UNITED SQUAD UPDATE

DEEGAN AND IRON AGREE NEW CONTRACTS – HOOLAHAN TO TRAIN IN PRE-SEASON WITH U’S

19 June 2019

Cambridge United can today provide an additional update on the contract situations of Gary Deegan, George Maris and Finley Iron, as well as Wes Hoolahan’s participation in the opening weeks of pre-season training with the Club.

Discussions with Gary Deegan have now been completed and we are pleased to announce that the midfielder has accepted fresh terms on a new one year contract.

Since joining in June 2017 Deegan has featured 88 times leading the U's in central midfield, with his committed and passionate displays resulting in the Club offering an extension to his time at the Abbey Stadium until the end of the 2019/20 season.

Cambridge United are also pleased to confirm that goalkeeper and academy product Finley Iron has also agreed a new deal with the Football Club. He signs a one year contract which will see him under contract until the end of the 2019/20 season.

Discussions between Cambridge United and George Maris have not yet reached a conclusion with the midfielder having rejected improved offers of a contract extension at the Abbey Stadium.  Whilst a competitive offer remains on the table from the Football Club, we do expect George will leave upon completion of his current contract on 30th June.

The U's signed Maris as a free agent in June 2016 as an exciting prospect following his development through Barnsley's youth system and he has since gone on to become a regular for United in midfield in Sky Bet League Two, making 112 appearances and scoring 21 goals. Cambridge United would like to wish George the very best in his future endeavours.

Finally as was confirmed yesterday afternoon by Head Coach Colin Calderwood in the local media, former Norwich City midfielder and Republic of Ireland international Wes Hoolahan will be joining Cambridge United to train with the first team squad during the opening weeks of pre-season.

The 37-year old -  who featured over 300 times across ten years for the Canaries where he previously worked with Colin Calderwood at Carrow Road - met with the U’s Head Coach, Assistant Head Coach Mark Bonner and Head of Football Ben Strang earlier this summer with the Irishman agreeing to begin pre-season at Cambridge United.

Hoolahan will join up with the United first team squad when the U’s return for pre-season on Monday (24th June), whilst he also considers an offer from the Football Club.

An interview on iFollow with Head of Football Ben Strang will be available for all supporters shortly.
