Cambridge United can confirm behind closed doors pre-season fixtures against Scottish Premiership side Heart of Midlothian and a match with Rangers Reserves during the U’s tour of Scotland ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
Last month the Club announced the schedule for the U’s preparations for the new season, which included home fixtures at the Abbey Stadium against Leicester City, Ipswich Town and a pre-season training camp at Largs, Scotland National Training centre between 15th-20th July.
As part of the tour, the Club can now confirm fixtures with both Hearts (20th July, 1pm) and Rangers Reserves (16th July, 11:30am) to add further strength to the pre-season schedule. Whilst the fixture against Hearts will be played behind closed doors, supporters will be allowed access to the fixture against Rangers Reserves. Further information about how fans can attend this game will be announced in due course.
As with the U’s matches against both Nottingham Forest U23s and Fulham, Cambridge United will provide supporters with full updates from both fixtures in Scotland across the Club’s social media channels.
Head of Football, Ben Strang commented: “We’re very pleased with the addition of these fixtures against Hearts and Rangers Reserves, which adds further quality to the schedule of matches set out in our preparation for the forthcoming season.
“In order to secure fixtures of this calibre we’re often bound by the condition of playing behind closed doors, but nevertheless we feel theses game will be extremely beneficial in providing significant tests to prepare the squad for the 2019/20 campaign.
“This season we felt it was important the squad faced challenging fixtures against opposition from varying levels, and we are therefore delighted that will include a mix of opponents from the Championship, Scottish Premiership and League One - as well as of course the exciting prospect of Premier League Leicester City travelling to the Abbey Stadium in late July.
“We are equally looking forward to welcoming back our supporters to the Abbey Stadium for that particular fixture and the final game of pre-season at home against Ipswich Town.”
United will host Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes side on Tuesday 23rd July (K.O. 7:30pm), as they return to home soil for the first time to take on the 2015/16 Premier League winners.
The U’s will also welcome East Anglian rivals Ipswich Town back to the Abbey Stadium on Saturday 27th July (K.O. 1:00pm), for what will be the final test ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
