Graham Daniels writes on behalf of the Board of Directors and the Trust Board.
“At Cambridge United we are proud of the work we do in the community. We are United for Cambridge and passionate about using the power of football for good in all parts of the City and the County. We are a Club firmly rooted in our community and serving that community is deep within our DNA.
Over the last four years our community work has expanded beyond all recognition. From helping youngsters in primary schools get active with science through to providing companionship to senior citizens at lunch clubs, we have helped promote inclusion and opportunity. At the same time we have given all parts of the community the chance to participate in this great game - from disability and walking football to Man v Fat football sessions.
This has been a team effort but over this period this work has been superbly led by Ben Szreter, our Community Trust CEO, who is now moving on to a role in policy and behavioural psychology at the Behavioural Insights Team in London. Under Ben’s direction the Trust published Gameplan 2020 three years ago - the blueprint which extended our work with an additional 11 programmes to 30 in total. Ben has also been the driving force behind the Club’s pioneering leadership role within football more widely as a ‘mentally healthy club’. It was no accident that ‘the BBC Documentary ‘A Royal Team Talk’ with HRH The Duke of Cambridge was filmed at the Abbey in May this year. He has also helped raise the profile of and funding for our work by introducing the Trust Gala Dinners which have now become an annual event.
We are ambitious for the future. We know there is a lot more that the Trust and Club can and will do. We can look forward to the future with confidence thanks to the fantastic foundations and innovations that Ben has helped us create for the community. We wish him the very best in the exciting next chapter of his career.”
