UNDER 18’S UPDATE – AUGUST/SEPTEMBER | @CUFCYouth

13 September 2018

We are delighted to announce that @CUFCYouth will be blogging throughout the 2018/19 season to provide monthly updates on the results and latest news from Cambridge United’s Youth Team. Head to Twitter and follow @CUFCYouth for regular updates, match footage and more.

Welcome to the first update for the Under 18’s this season.

Their season started away at AFC Wimbledon with Ben Worman scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory. Worman has since signed his first professional contract with the U’s.

Their next game was an away trip to Northampton which they lost 2-1 with Sam Bennett scoring the U’s goal from the penalty spot. This was unfortunate as the U’s were the better team just couldn’t convert their chances.

Their third game was away at Gillingham with the U’s losing 3-2 in an entertaining match. Bennett scored again for the U’s, with a 40 yard own goal also on the scoresheet for United.

After the season started with three consecutive away games, the U’s then played host to Luton Town, in a home fixture at Newmarket Town. The match ended in a 1-1 draw in a game which saw five yellow cards and one red card. Again Sam Bennett scored for the U’s.

After playing Luton in the league, the Under 18’s played against the Hatters away in the League Cup, a competition which Luton won last season. The U’s ran out 4-1 winners in an impressive display against the holders with Sam Bennett scoring a hat trick and a goal from Jake Battersby. The reward for this brilliant display was an away game at Barnet in the last 16.

After their cup heroics the Under 18’s returned to the league against Leyton Orient. The U’s won 4-2 in a superb performance, with two goals from Sam Bennett and two from trialist Sonny Carey.

The under 18’s next game was another away trip this time at Southend in which they lost 3-2 to the Essex high flyers. They weren’t helped though by some interesting refereeing decisions, including a dismissal for Lewis Simper after two dubious yellow cards. Tom Dickens scored his first of the season and Sam Bennett continued his brilliant goal scoring form.

The under 18’s cup adventure continued this week with their last 16 tie away at Barnet. After going into half time leading through Charlie Johnson’s header they were pegged back in the second half. The match went straight to penalties after 90 minutes. The boys had obviously been watching England in the summer and won on penalties to progress to the quarter final of the League cup.

We hope you have enjoyed the update on the Under 18’s and we will continue to update our Twitter account @CUFCYouth with the latest news.
