Cambridge United are delighted to reveal the final legend voted for by the Amber Army in the recent tea bars poll, as the one and only John “Shaggy” Taylor!
“Taylor’s Tea Bar” will officially be open for business at the rear of the North Habbin Stand as of this weekend’s fixture against MK Dons.
Ahead of the 2018/19 season, the club opened up the opportunity for fans to vote and decide which three players from the U’s 106 year history deserved to have their contribution recognised with a small area of the Abbey Stadium.
In partnership with Mick George, the club has re-branded three of the catering units and tea bars located around the Abbey on a match day.
The first two legends in the form of King of Abbey, Paul Wanless, and hometown hero Josh Coulson have already been announced, with the U’s leading goalscorer in the League era, John Taylor, the final star of the past joining them thanks to the votes of the U’s faithful.
Taylor played for United from 1988 to 1992, then from 1997 to 2004, making over 330 appearances and scoring a club record 86 goals across his two stints.
Among the countless memories Shaggy provided the Amber Army, the play-off win at Wembley in 1991, an infamous hat-trick against local rival Peterborough United and a stellar performance in the famous FA Cup clash with Arsenal at Highbury stand out as particular highlights.
Having also led the U’s to the 2002 LDV Vans Trophy final at Cardiff’s Millenium Stadium during his three year spell as U’s boss from 2001 to 2004, Taylor has unsurprisingly been selected by United supporters as one of the three legends in the tea bars poll.
Thank you to every supporter who voted in the poll.
