FA YOUTH CUP REPORT | CAMBRIDGE UNITED 2 AFC SUDBURY 1

31 October 2018

Cambridge United progressed past AFC Sudbury in the First Round of the FA Youth Cup, prevailing 2-1 thanks to goals from Ben Worman and Sam Bennett.

United weathered early storm from the visitors, who were clearly fired up in the early encounters.

It was United who carved the more promising opportunities throughout the first 45 minutes from there on though.

Blake D’Arcy fired a volley wide inside the Sudbury area on eight minutes, before Sam Bennett was unable to finish a well worked U’s move one on one with Sudbury keeper Charlie McCarthy moments later.

Sudbury left back Liam Bennett struck the cross bar with a looping effort which proved to be the visitors only chance of the first half.

The Sudbury shot stopper was again on hand to deny to Lewis Simper and Jake Battersby, with the latter seeing his low shot tipped around the post minutes before half time.

After the break Craig Foxall was called into action to ensure United remained level, and Jimmy Unwin’s side quickly took advantage and stamped their authority on the game with a fine strike on 50 minutes.

Ben Worman cracked an unstoppable drive with his left foot 25 yards from goal which clipped the underside of the cross bar and bounced over the line to earn the U’s the lead in some style.

They continued to push forward as the game moved towards the final quarter, and barring a Sudbury free kick in a central position which was deflected wide on 70 minutes, United protected their lead well.

Sam Bennett eventually completed the job for the U’s with a very neat finish on 81 minutes, lobbing McCarthy from the left side of box to secure United’s place in the second round.

United conceded a late penalty which was converted from the spot by Isaac Skubich but it did little to disrupt the U’s on the night and their progress in the competition.
