STRIKER BILLY WATERS JOINS U’S ON LOAN FROM NORTHAMPTON TOWN

12 January 2018

Cambridge United can today confirm the loan signing of striker Billy Waters from Northampton Town until the conclusion of the 2017/18 Sky Bet League Two season.

Waters, 23, arrives at the Abbey Stadium to provide additional fire power to United's front line and has signed in time to be eligible for tomorrow's clash against Mansfield Town.

Delighted to add Waters to the first team squad, Cambridge United Head Coach Shaun Derry commented: "It's been well-documented that we have been looking to add a different dimension to our attacking options in this window. We are therefore delighted that we have been able to secure Billy's services for the rest of the season.

"To bring him into the squad in time for the fixture with Mansfield Town will give everyone a great lift as we enter our next challenge. We wish him all the very best of luck for his time here."

Having begun his career within Crewe Alexandra, Waters joined Cheltenham Town in 2015 and soon became a regular goal scorer for the Robins, finding the back of the net 27 times in 93 games across a two year period at Whaddon Road.

His form attracted a host of interest and last summer he made the jump up to League One with Northampton Town. He now switches to the U's hopeful of re-finding his goal scoring form in this division.

Head of Football Operations Ben Strang added: “Billy is a player we’ve watched extensively over the past couple of years. His form for Cheltenham last season in League Two merited an opportunity for him to step up a league but with limited opportunities at Northampton, this is a good move for all parties.”

“Billy has a number of excellent attributes and we’re convinced that our fans will appreciate the energy and enthusiasm he brings to the team.”
