MATCH REPORT | CAMBRIDGE UNITED 2 COVENTRY CITY 1

16 September 2017

Cambridge United produced their best performance of the season to defeat Coventry City 2-1 at the Cambs Glass Stadium and extend their unbeaten streak at home in Sky Bet League Two.

Headers from Jabo Ibehre and Uche Ikpeazu saw Shaun Derry’s men overcome a strong Sky Blues outfit, who had equalised after half time through Duckens Nazon.

An unchanged U’s side wasted no time in picking up where they left off against Crewe in midweek, Ibehre leaping highest on the 10th minute to power Piero Mingoia’s cross past Lee Burge and score his second goal in as many games.

David Forde was forced to make his only save of the first half when he palmed away a powerful drive at goal from Coventry’s Duckens Nazon moments later.

Ibehre twice came close to doubling his tally and United’s lead before the break but Sky Blues keeper Burge denied the striker with a pair of saves to keep the lead to just one from a positive opening 45 minutes for Shaun Derry’s side.

However, it took the visitors just seven second half minutes to level through Nazon who smashed a half volley past David Forde at the United keeper’s near post, after being picked out by Peter Vincenti with a lofted ball into the area.

Forde produced two excellent stops to deny Mark Robin’s men a lead around the hour mark and keep the game all square at a time when Coventry looked likely to push on.

However, Ikpeazu muscled his way on the end of another well-delivered Mingoia cross from the left flank, before guiding the ball with his head into the top right corner of Burge’s goal.

Coventry pushed hard for a second leveller, with Chris Stokes missing from point blank range, Liam Kelly rattling the cross bar and Nazon forcing a sublime reaction save from Forde within the final ten minutes as United held on.
