U'S ANNOUNCE SIMON DOBBIN FUNDRAISER MATCH AGAINST SOUTHEND UNITED

4 June 2017

Cambridge United are delighted to confirm a pre-season friendly against Southend United at the Cambs Glass Stadium on Saturday 29th July (K.O. 3:00pm), with proceeds from the fixture donated to Simon Dobbin.

The match will provide the opportunity for supporters from both Clubs to support Simon Dobbin and his family, with funds raised being contributed towards his ongoing care needs.

The Mildenhall-based fan was left brain damaged after a brutal attack in Southend two years ago, having spent the afternoon supporting the U's following the fixture at Roots Hall in March 2015.

Simon made an emotional return to the Cambs Glass Stadium last October for the first time since the assault, when he attended the U's Sky Bet League Two fixture with Portsmouth and was welcomed on to the pitch with a standing ovation before the game.

The scheduled pre-season friendly with the Shrimpers gives the players, staff and supporters of both Clubs the chance to join together in a mark of solidarity for Simon and his family.

Commenting on the importance of the fundraiser, CEO Jez George added: "Firstly we would like to thank Southend United for their commitment to this game in order to help raise money for Simon and his family.

"We are all aware of the tragic assault that has led to Simon's life-changing injuries, and this match provides Cambridge United and Southend United with the opportunity to show both Club's support.

"Simon's wife, Nicole, is a truly remarkable woman who has shown astonishing resolve in her care for Simon in unimaginable circumstances, and this is a positive way in which we can all contribute to help Simon, Nicole and the family improve their day to day life as much as possible.

"From the welcome that Simon, Nicole and his family received last season when taking to the field before the Portsmouth match, we know that all our fans will be committed in their support of this game and attend in as many numbers as possible.  Our aim is to attract a huge crowd and generate as much money as possible for such a worthy cause."

Further details about how you can support Simon and his family by purchasing tickets for the pre-season fixtures will be released next week.
