United women claim 3-0 win over Lowestoft

Cambridge United Women’s FC continued their positive run with a 3-0 home win over Lowestoft Town ladies, courtesy of goals from Mills, Bright and Logie.

Despite a long opening spell in which neither side settled into the game particularly well, Taylor and Mills came close to breaking the deadlock for the U’s on six minutes after Hewitt had caused the visitors problems down the right wing before delivering a pair of teasing crosses into the box.

Lowestoft weathered the storm though and were making life tricky for the U’s but a determined back four kept them at bay. A long range effort from Jenkins failed to trouble the town goalkeeper midway through the first half.

The teams matched each other for the remainder of the first period and the scoreline was unblemished at the break.

United shot out the traps in the second half however, with Mills breaking free down the wing before driving across goal only to be blocked by a last ditch tackle from Lowestoft as she looked to open the scoring.

Steve Edwards’ side continued to press though and on 51 minutes finally got the first of the day, when Hewitt forced a mistake from the Lowestoft defence which Mills took full advantage of when she curled an effort directly into the top left corner of the goal.

United remained on the front foot and looked to add to their lead promptly. Two quickfire corners caused the Lowestoft defence issues and on 69 minutes the skipper Bright led by example, when a ball popped up for her to lash it first time into the net to double the score line.

Lowestoft struggled to get into any stride and the U’s were doing well at keeping most of the play in the opposition’s half. On 78 minutes Logie struck from outside the box and as it traveled to goal, hit a bobble in the pitch and bounced over the diving keeper.

An effective final 12 minutes from the U’s saw them manage the game professionally and keep a clean sheet as they sealed the three points.

Staring XI: Crook, Jenkins, Bright ( C ), Burt, Bennett, Baker (75), Perfect (63), Mills, Hewitt, Taylor, Logie (78)
Subs: Phillips (75), Simmons (78), Goodchild (63)
