DEADLINE DAY: U’S SWOOP TO SIGN 49-YEAR OLD FAN PAUL DICKERSON

24 March 2016

Cambridge United have today completed the signing of 49-year old supporter of the club Paul Dickerson on deadline day.

A fan of the U’s since 1978, who could regularly be found in the North Habbin Stand on a Saturday afternoon prior to today’s announcement, Dickerson is sure to be a popular figure with the Amber Army.

Despite admitting to having no previous footballing experience at any level, his years on the terraces at the Abbey Stadium have allowed to him to gather a vast amount of knowledge and also maintain his pristine physical condition.

The club were quick to swoop for the 49-year old’s services, with a medical, contract negotiations and press conference all taking place this afternoon ahead of the 5pm deadline in order to officially announce Dickerson as the club’s deadline day signing.

With his 50th birthday fast approaching in May, the club have given Paul squad number 50.

Speaking to the press on his arrival at the U’s, Dickerson commented: “It has been a dream come true and I’m raring to go.

“The club have been fantastic, I’ve had a medical and gone through the full process which has been brilliant. To be honest, in my medical I think the physio was just checking that I had a pair of legs, and I may do alright as a ball boy.

“Contract negotiations went well with Jez (George, Chief Executive), everything is good and I’m glad to be joining the team.”

Pleased to have secured the services of such a vastly experienced individual, Manager Shaun Derry added:  “We’re absolutely delighted that Paul is finally here, a lot of clubs have been after him but we’ve managed to get the deal done right at the final hurdle.

“He’s signed a long-term non-lucrative deal which is fantastic for the football club. We have high hopes and think he may be a flying winger, although judging by his legs he might be a centre back.

“Paul has character, charisma and everything that we want at this football club in abundance.”

You can watch Dickerson’s first press conference as a Cambridge United player here.

The Deadline Day signing experience was the first prize of a number of unique opportunities for supporters to enjoy alongside Cambridge United’s first team players and staff, as part of the #CambridgeUnites campaign.
