MATCH REPORT: CAMBRIDGE UNITED 1 IPSWICH TOWN 1

Cambridge United draw 1—1 with Ipswich Town in the opening pre-season encounter at the Cambs Glass Stadium.

The score line was decided in the final ten minutes when Andre Dozzell’s 83rd minute strike, was cancelled out by Joe Pigott’s first goal on home soil.

Shaun Derry’s men nullified the Championship visitors for much of the first half, with Leon Legge closely marking Ipswich’s target man Daryl Murphy.

Shane McLoughlin looked to have given the Tractor Boys the lead, when he tapped in a rebound from Will Norris who had made an excellent reaction save prior, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

George Maris went closest for the U’s in the opening 45 minutes when he sprung onto the end of Max Clark’s ball over the top before rounding Ipswich goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski and hitting the post with his left-footed shot.

Shaun Derry once again made a host of changes on the hour mark, including Josh Coulson who could not convert Mark Robert’s head down from a set piece delivery.

Will Norris was forced into another fine save when Ipswich substitute Freddie Sears darted through one-on-one, with the U’s keeper standing tall and blocking the shot with his feet.

However, Norris could not stop Andre Dozzell’s strike seven minutes from time when the midfielder jinked his way into the U’s 18 yard box before slotting in left-footed from 10 yard out.

United fought until the very end and were rewarded in the final minute, when Conor Newton tore through the middle of the field before playing an exceptional ball through for Joe Pigott to register his first on home soil and level the game at 1-1.

The U's return home on Tuesday evening against Aston Villa, with tickets available online here.
