SHAUN DERRY “RARING TO GO” FOR NEW CAMPAIGN

4 August 2016

INTERVIEW: SHAUN DERRY

Cambridge United Manager Shaun Derry is confident the U’s are primed to hit the new season in fine form.

United welcome Barnet to the Cambs Glass Stadium on Saturday afternoon as the rollercoaster of Sky Bet League Two begins once more, with the U’s boss full of anticipation for the campaign ahead.

“There is certainly nobody more excited than the first team squad for the start of the new season. This is what it is all about, playing for points. It is the opening day of the season, so we’ll be hoping for a big turnout from the supporters at the Cambs Glass Stadium.

“We’re playing a team who are based not too far down the road from us, so it’s all set to be an exciting start.

“Pre-season has been measured with varying types of opponents and challenges along the way, but it’s been profitable and now we are raring to go.

“This division is a rollercoaster and you play against different types of opposition from one week to the next, so we know we’ll very much be in for tough game against Barnet.

“Martin Allen and the way his teams set up over the years are very demanding when it comes to what you come up against, so we have to be ready for that.”

Derry’s men completed the 2015/16 season with an eight game unbeaten run, which the U’s boss is hopeful his side can continue this weekend in order to  begin the new season on the right note.

“The unbeaten run has been a driving force throughout pre-season. Of course a run is going to come to an end at some point and you have to be optimistic that you can get back on the right track at the next opportunity.

“However, we are eight games unbeaten and we do not want that to end.”

Finally, Derry expressed his pleasure at opening the new campaign on home soil and discussed the benefits of playing in front of the Amber Army at the Cambs Glass Stadium.

“You always keep a look out for the fixtures when you are out on your travels during the summer, and to be at home on the first game is a great benefit to both us coaches and players as well as the fans.

“The supporters last year really were fantastic and backed us to the very end and consistently throughout the season. So we’re looking forward to that again this year and for the players it drives them into areas that they wouldn’t be able to achieve without that backing.

“It’s a great fixture and hopefully it can be the start of a positive season.”
