Chadwick stars in successful opening clash for the U’s
Cambridge United toppled Bath FC 13-6 at the University of Cambridge Sports Centre as Luke Chadwick inspired the U’s to a win in their National League season opener, thanks to a fine five goal haul.
United set a superb early tempo in the fixture and it didn’t take long for the former Manchester United and Cambridge United first team star to register his first goal for his new side after just two minutes.
Bath responded with a period of good passing play and despite racking up three fouls in the first four minutes they quickly managed to put one past Cusumano in the amber and black goal to equalise.
However, Luis Mendonca’s side were soon to stamp their authority on the contest, with Morcillo dinking the ball past the Bath keeper after some good interlinking play from the U’s, before Martinez added to his tally too with a great finish from outside the box.
United ramped up the pressure further and scored three more goals before the break to all but put the game beyond the visitors ahead of the start of the second period.
However, the second half turned out to be even more exciting than the first, with 12 goals shared between the two sides.
Bath scored early past Cusumano to give them hope, but once again the U’s stayed strong and rallied to keep their opponents at arm’s length.
Chadwick added his third of the game on 23 minutes whilst Morcillo was also firing and completed his hat trick before the half hour mark. Bath managed to find some inspiration and gave everything they had in a shaky few minutes for the U’s, which saw the deficit cut to just four goals.
Eventually though, United regained their focus and rattled off several goals in quick fire time to complete a 13-6 score line, and secure their first win in as many games.
