DERRY EXCITED BY CAMBRIDGE UNITED “JOURNEY”

New United Manager on joining the U’s

Cambridge United Manager Shaun Derry has revealed his delight at joining the Cambridge United “journey” after arriving at the Abbey Stadium.

The new United boss was officially unveiled at a press conference yesterday afternoon and was thrilled to have been given the opportunity to take the helm at the club.

“We are all aware of the journey this club has been on and I am excited to be a part of that,” he said.

“The club feels like a great fit. Logistically, the history of the football club and more importantly the staff that are already here, give me a great feeling about coming to Cambridge United.

“Throughout my career I have followed my instinct and Cambridge United just feels right. I feel there is huge potential at the club and it is already developing rapidly.

“The emphasis on working with the community of Cambridge is huge, and that gives us the opportunity to aim higher.”

The U’s boss also met with the first team playing and coaching staff for the first time yesterday morning, and feels the group has all the right ingredients to develop into an exciting prospect.

“I look at the blend of players that are here and feel they can push on to the next level. The message to the group was that the club has enjoyed great success in recent years, having been propelled into the Football League, but can we now take it further? I feel we can.

“The coaching staff are employed by the football club, and the Chairman and Chief Executive put their absolute trust into these people, so do I.

“It is an open book for everybody to prove what they can do and the first impressions have been brilliant.”

Finally upon his arrival at the club, Derry delivered a rallying cry to the Amber Army, he said: “My message to the supporters is that we are all in this together. Only together as a group can we change the future for this football club.

“The supporters are probably the most important group of people at any football club. The players need the support of the fans and we all watched the television when Manchester United came to the Abbey Stadium and saw that incredible atmosphere.

“I want to be a part of that passion for Cambridge.”
