Cambridge United vs Alfreton Town

12 February 2013

Sorry U's defeated at home

FULL TIME: CAMBRIDGE UNITED 0-3 ALFRETON TOWN

21.35: GOAL CAMBRIDGE UNITED 0-3 ALFRETON TOWN. It goes from bad to worse as Meadows' cross is converted by PAUL CLAYTON from six yards, no challenge on the striker who tucks away a shot from six yards. The final whistle sounds seconds later to end a miserable night for the U's.

21.33: Four minutes to be added. JOE ANDERSON has been voted the MAYICLAIM MAN OF THE MATCH.

21.31: GOAL CAMBRIDGE UNITED 0-2 ALFRETON TOWN. If there was any doubt the points were heading back to Derbyshire, that settles it. NATHAN ARNOLD picks the ball up 30 yards out, strides forward before cracking a
shot past Craig Ross from outside the box. Good finish dead and buried.

21.23: United's last change sees Hudson on for Reed, who has been quiet this half. Hudson will add his height to the attack, the new Dion perhaps?

21.18: Alfreton doing a good job of slowing things up, United need to pass the ball quickly, but the players look nervous and are going long and hopeful far too often.

21.10: James Brighton is on for Wassmer, and immediately hassles a corner out of Josh Law. In it comes but there's some pushing, Alfreton free kick.

21.07: Tonight's attendance, 1,779 (away 29).

21.04: YELLOW CARD. Streete booked for a late tackle on Shaw. Roberts lumps the free kick hopefully into the box but Alfreton head it away.

21.01: Alfreton unsurprisingly trying to slow the game to a crawl, Tom Shaw is on for the U's in place of Rossi Jarvis.

20.54: GOAL CAMBRIDGE UNITED 0-1 ALFRETON TOWN. United behind and it's a poor goal from a defensive perspective. Alfreton gain a corner on their left, in it comes and LEIGH FRANKS makes a run across the near post to plant a header past Craig Ross. Poor defending, the visitors lead.

20.53: Anderson goes dashing down the left and sees his cross blocked behind for a corner. In it comes from Jarvis, gets a flick on and arrives at Reed at the back post, but Barnes saves his volley and Alfreton clear.

20.51: Roberts presents the ball to Hewitt, who finds Clayton in space but his shot is well held by Ross.

20.48: Back underway, almost an early chance for Arnold but Anderson just about recovers to scuff the ball clear.

HALF TIME: Cambridge United 0-0 Alfreton Town

20.32: That's half-time, shame the whistle came from a United perspective as they were enjoying their best period of the match. Not a classic so far, but signs of promise from the U's.

20.27: Three chances in quick succession for United there. First Reed wriggles away from Franks, despite the defender's clear tug on his shirt, and gets a low shot in which Barnes does well to save. United regroup and come again, looping the ball into the box, Gash's knock down finds Hughes, but his shot crashes against the post. Berry latches onto the rebound but can only guide a first time shot over from a narrow angle.

20.23: Berry takes aim from 20 yards but that shot is rising and just over.

20.21: Great pace from Reed takes him away from Kempson again, who brings down the on loan striker. Fortunately for the defender referee Johnson doesn't seem interested in dishing out any further punishment. U's free kick from Jarvis is poor and headed away.

20.15: YELLOW CARD. That'll be a booking for Kempson as he sends Reed sprawling to the turf near the left touchline. Anderson will take, over it comes, the ball loops off a gaggle of players and appears to be looping in before Barnes dives across to palm it away. Gash tries to retrieve but runs out of pitch, goal kick.

20.10: Alfreton corner now, taken by Law, it's headed half clear, helped back into the box by a blue shirt but Clayton's attempted overhead kick is blocked. and Meadows blasts the rebound well over.

20.08: Free kick to United as Gash is fouled by Franks, who gets a talking to from the referee. Jarvis to take, but that's his best delivery and easily cleared.

20.04: United with a corner now after Kempson slides the ball behind. In it comes from Jarvis, Reed does well to find space but can only guide his volley wide. That was half a chance for the new striker. Moments later he escapes down the right and fires in a good cross but Hughes plants his header past the upright.

20.00: Ooft, that's close from Berry. Great work from Reed sees him get the better of his man and pull the ball back for Bez, whose first time shot is rising and just wide.

19.57: Nice curling cross from Anderson headed away, but Alfreton stumble the ball behind for a corner. In it comes from Jarvis, Berry goes down in a heap, looked to have been shoved off the ball but the referee isn't interested. Play switches to the other end, McAuley and Ross leave the ball for each other allowing Arnold to nip in, but he pokes a shot into the side netting.

19.52: Good play from Anderson, who manages to keep the ball in by the goal line and get it back to Gash. He works it on to Wassmer, who skips past one tackle but sees his cross cleared. At the other end Streete finds a bit of space on the edge of the box but his first time slot flies well wide.

19.50: Scrappy in the opening stages, Alfreton have a free kick now, Wassmer tapping the ankles of Bradley who goes down, free kick left of centre. In it comes from Arnold but it's a simple take for Craig Ross.

19.46: Liam Hughes is stationed wide on the left for United, Jarvis wide right with Wassmer and Berry patrolling the centre like a couple of blond bomb shells.

19.45: Here we go, Alfreton get us underway attacking the NRE.

19.43: As I mentioned, United won 3-0 in this fixture last season, Harrison  Dunk with two goals and Luke Berry the other. Here come the teams.

Cambridge United: Ross, Roberts, Anderson, Coulson, McAuley, Hughes, Berry, Wassmer (Brighton 69), Jarvis (Shaw 58), Reed (Hudson 81), Gash. Subs: Hedge, Shaw, Pugh, Hudson, Brighton.

Alfreton Town: Barnes, Streete, Franklin, Kempson, Franks, Arnold, Hewitt, Meadows, Law, Clayton, Bradley. Subs: Taylor, Soares, Boden, Worsfold, Tomlinson.

TEAM NEWS: Two changes for the U's, and the new boys both get immediate debuts. Joe Anderson and Jamie Reed come into the side for Harrison Dunk, who misses out all together, and Tom Shaw, who is on the bench.

Plenty of familiar faces in the Alfreton line-up from their visit to the R Costings Abbey Stadium last season, when the U's triumphed 3-0. Paul Clayton and Nathan Arnold are a lively front two.

19.20: Good evening and welcome to the R Costings Abbey Stadium for tonight's Blue Square Bet Premier clash between Cambridge United and Alfreton Town. A patched-up United side lost out at Kidderminster on Saturday, and with some much needed reinforcements drafted in yesterday, Richard Money's men will be looking to get back to winning ways.
