Jordan Johnson has joined the club as a second year scholar and will add competition in the central midfield area.
The Lewisham-born 17-year-old was signed thanks to the youth department's link with Knights Academy in Grove Park, London, who play in the Football Conference Youth League under the name of Cambridge United.
This arrangement was set up in conjunction with ex-CUFC trainee Larry McAvoy, who coaches Millwall U16's and runs the scheme, allowing us to see boys that have been released by a number of professional clubs in London. Larry has been fantastic throughout the process and hopefully Jordan's success will cement our ongoing relationship with the college still further.
Jordan lives in Lewisham and previously played for Croydon Athletic and Bromley. He had been on trial at a number of Premiership and Championship clubs before Director of Youth Football Jez George spotted him playing against Welling United last month. Following a week in Cambridge, training with our scholars and playing against Godmanchester, the club was delighted to offer Jordan a scholarship for the remainder of this season.
"Jordan has coped really well with being thrown in at the deep end," said Jez. "He is athletic, likes a tackle, has good technical ability and is naturally left footed. Jordan has also shown a good temperament and a desire to learn, which is a crucial quality that we look for in our scholars.
"We believe he has a bright future and were delighted when he accepted our offer. In the short term he will add competition in central midfield and some balance to our squad. In the longer term, we anticipate him pushing hard for a professional contract at the end of the season.
"By signing Jordan at the start of his second year he knows that time is at a premium but he has the determination and focus, along with the ability, to achieve this aim."
