Craig Bussens is the second of our second year scholars to be offered a professional contract, following Robbie Willmott earlier this season.

Cambridge United beat off stiff competition from several clubs to sign Craig on a scholarship after he was released from Norwich City's academy in 2006.

He arrived as a central midfielder but the coaching staff soon realised his greatest strength was running with the ball and taking players on, so he was moved to the right flank. He made an immediate impact when the previous manager, Rob Newman, spotted his potential in pre-season training and threw him on as substitute in a pre-season friendly at the Abbey Stadium, ironically against Norwich City.

Craig impressed throughout his first season, scoring the equaliser (pictured) against Crewe Alexandra in our famous FA Youth Cup win last season, and was instrumental in CRC's escape from relegation.

His speed and athleticism have continued to trouble Ridgeons League teams this season and in the last three months 'Bussy' has been in great form, and anyone who has witnessed his wing play will understand why Jimmy Quinn has offered him a professional contract.

Craig BussensHead of Youth Development Jez George commented, "Craig's end product now matches his approach play and he really is an exciting talent.

"Whilst a different player to Robbie Willmott, he is just as direct and dangerous, so let's hope these two youngsters get the home crowd off their seats next season!

"Craig has worked extremely hard and thoroughly deserves this opportunity. He is a really exciting talent but he knows that a professional contract is only the start."

Jez added, "Craig is the fifth scholar to be signed on professional terms by the club in the first two years of the new Youth Development Scheme, so we are delighted by this success and determined to ensure this production line continues at the same rate, despite our lack of funding.

"Craig has a great role model in Josh Coulson and should aspire to emulate his progress and establish himself in the first team".
