Youth Team win 11-1 In Cup

Posted on: Wed 12 Sep 2007

Cambridge United's scholars eased through their FA Youth Cup preliminary round tie on Tuesday evening with a 11-1 win against Ipswich side Whitton United.

Whitton's first team play in Ridgeon's League One, a division below the Premier League where United's scholars play every week under the banner of CRC, so it was always likely to be a one-sided game against Whitton's youth team, but Head of Youth Development Jez George was pleased with his young players' approach.

"I'd wanted them to make a good start and we were 3-0 up in ten minutes and 5-0 up after fifteen minutes, and showed professionalism," he said.

"The lads didn't take their feet off the gas and played the game at a good tempo and scored some good goals, and we were disappointed to concede the one we did."

The goals were scored by Robbie Willmott (3), Piers Wixon (2), Andy Marriott (2), John Yambasu (2), Michael Kirby and Calvin Dinsley.

Calvin joined the club recently after a series of thorough medical checks. The Worcester-based central midfielder was released by West Bromwich Albion last season after injury problems but WBA's Youth Development Officer Dan Ashworth, who was previously here at United in the same role, tipped off Jez George that he would be worth looking at.

"We were keen to sign him because he's a very talented player but he missed all of pre-season because he was having these thorough medical checks and we had to wait for news of any injury problems," explained Jez.

"But that's all resolved itself and he joined us a couple of weeks ago. Last night was his second game for us and he's now signed a two-year scholarship."

Cambridge United will play either Wroxham or Newmarket Town in the 1st Qualifying Round match, to be played at the Abbey Stadium on Thursday 27th September. Wroxham and Newmarket play this evening.
