Girls Centre of Excellence Reports

Posted on: Sun 22 Jul 2007

On Saturday 14th October, Cambridge United's girls teams played teams from Norwich City.

Under 10's
Cambridge United 2 v 4 Norwich City

Cambridge United Under 10's went into their fixture against Norwich City full of confidence given two impressive successive wins. Although confident, Cambridge also knew from the past that Norwich are always an organised side and, with this in mind, went into the game mindful of what they may be up against.

Cambridge got off to a good start thanks to some good attacking play, which lead to Summer Cutmore's first goal of the season. A second goal, added by player of the match Georgie Evans, was not enough to keep Norwich at bay. Norwich continued to pressure United, who at times found it hard to get to grips with a very good Norwich midfield and with that Norwich found their opening, eventually scoring four to put the game firmly in their favour and beyond United's reach.

United's Under 12's secured their third successive win against a very good Norwich team. Defensively the U12's remained strong throughout, getting behind the ball and working extremely hard for each other. United created some great opportunities. Two first period goals clinched the match with Amber Gaylor's long range effort smashing against the crossbar and Laura Mills was following up to get control and smack home the rebound.
Mills then stuck again with a close range finish.
Everyone in the side deserves a mention for the performance.

Under 14's
Cambridge United 3 v 5 Norwich City

On paper high flying Norwich would romp this game but events were not quite as predicted as the first period saw with both sides having chances although Cambridge did most of the defending as Norwich moved the ball well and attacked down both flanks. Norwich scored early on but Cambridge defended stoically and equalised from a breakaway which saw Samara Nche slide a pass to Kelley Blanchflower to slot in at the far post.

In the second period honours were again even until after 10 minutes Cambridge lost their concentration allowing Norwich to score 2 goals in quick succession. However this was still not the end and Cambridge forced their way back into the game when Samara Nche scored from close range and Sophie Wing finished off a delightful cross from Kelly Blanchflower behind the Norwich back line.

So. 3-3 and 30 minutes left. For 20 minutes Cambridge were a match for Norwich but the last 10 minutes saw their tremendous effort and commitment to the cause thwarted as fatigue set in and Norwich were able to capitalise with 2 late goals to claim a very exciting game.

Under 16's
Cambridge United 1 v 6 Norwich City

A visit by top of the league Norwich City saw United continue their losing start to the season with a 6-1 defeat. The game started in the worse possible manner with Cambridge conceding after only 2 minutes. The visitors were in complete control and doubled their lead after 15 minutes. Half time could not come any sooner as Norwich added a further and dominated the play.

After the restart, United seemed to be revived and began to make a contest of the game. They were rewarded with a goal from striker, Ali Wright, and could have made it more if chances had been put away. However, Norwich seemed to step up a gear and added a further 2 goals to their tally within 10 minutes of United scoring. They regained the dominance they had during the first half, and saw out the game as winners.
