Bright Future for a United City

Posted on: Fri 24 Jul 2009

Women's football in Cambridge moves into a new era for the start of the 2009/10 season.

Cambridge United and Cambridge City women's football clubs have taken the radical step of merging, and the new club, Cambridge Women's FC, will play it's first league game on Sunday August 16th. Just a few years ago the proposition would have been laughed out of hand and dismissed as ridiculous.

After a lot of soul searching and lengthy discussions, the two clubs decided that in fact they had more in common with each other than the old rivalry suggested. There was much more to be gained by all if they could simply join forces. There will be a team in the South East Combination tier 3 of the football pyramid and a reserve team in the Eastern Region Division one.

"Players have often migrated between both clubs and we saw this as an opportunity to really strengthen women's football in the area," said Kate Da Costa, former manager of Cambridge United.

Niccy Townely, Chairperson of the new club, said, "This is such an exciting time to be involved. There has been terrific interest from players wanting to join us and there is a real buzz about the place."

Instead of doing battle against each other the old enemies will be stepping over the white line together.

Training is at Cambridge Rugby Club, Granchester Road, Cambridge CB3 9EW from 7.00pm to 8.30pm every Tuesday and Thursday. There will be two teams and all players are welcome - check out the website for more details: www.clubwebsite.co.uk/cambridgewomensfootballclub
