Womens Local Derby
Cambridge United Women play their Cambridge City counterparts in the Women's Invitation Cup Final this evening.
The match kicks off at 7.30pm at Milton Road and your support for the team in amber and black would be welcome.
Since 2005/06, Cambridge United Women's team has benefited from the inclusion of girls who have been through the Centre of Excellence. This has enabled them to develop their skills playing alongside more experienced players.
At the start of the season, our manager Kate Turney found herself in charge of a young and inexperienced team and early results reflected this, but as the season has progressed our results have improved with only two defeats in our last ten league games.
In the quarter final, CUWFC entertained Lakenheath and despite hitting the woodwork on five occasions, the game remained goalless after 90 minutes. But during extra time Julie Ikeda scored twice to ensure a hard earned victory.
Then in the semi final we beat Cambridge Rangers 5-1 at home, taking advantage of gale force wind conditions in the first half and scoring through Rebekah Fisk, Sam Reid and Amy Houghton (2). Despite conceding an early second half goal, Alice Kempski broke free to complete the scoring.
The Cambridge United squad is as follows:
Livvy Poulter, Vicky Neal (captain), Amy Smith, Kate Turney (manager), Sarah Crook, Alice Kempski, Amy Houghton, Rebekah Fisk, Julie Ikeda, Sam Reid, Anna Jephson, Sophie Collins, Sarah Cornwell, Imogen Elbourn.
