CRC 2 Soham Town Rangers 0
Our 4th straight win brought us to within one win of the top eight and claimed a notable scalp against the run away leaders.
I was away on Wednesday with a group of Under 16 trialists in Derby, making decisions on the next intake of scholars, so I asked the players to text me with their opinion of the game. Rather than try to report on a game I did not watch, I thought I would do something different and print the players' views (with their permission) below:
Sam Beagle (GK) - I thought we soaked up the pressure well and started to play to our strengths as the game went on. We found it difficult in the first 20 minutes but we started to cope with them after that. Could have taken a few more chances than we did to alleviate the pressure but we didn't and rode our luck a bit until we scored the second goal.
Rory McAuley (RB) - A good performance. We made it hard for them and they got frustrated, although we rode our luck a bit. Could have scored a couple before we got the second and finished the game off.
Michael Kirby (LB) - Great result. Nolan (Keeley) was pleased with the performance. I got caught pushed over too far in the first half but their right winger was just cheating all game. Dealt with him better in the second half though and was pleased with the team's overall performance.
Lewis Carr (CB) - I thought that it was a good overall performance. We were really resilient and maybe rode our luck a little in the first half but managed to get through without conceding. Thought we were patient in the second half and played intelligently!I was pleased with how I played but felt it was definitely more of a team performance.
Sam Cutler (CM) - Played well. We had a few good chances. Dealt with the way they played in the second half. Overall, a good solid performance and three more points.
Sam Ives (CM) - Great result. I think I did alright. I battled well but think I could have got on the ball maybe a little bit more. We did quite well in getting the wide players and front men to drop in.
Craig Bussens (RM) - The game went well. It was a good team performance. We should have finished a couple of chances early on which would have killed them off. Defensively done well but should have kept the ball better when attacking.
Jordan Patrick (LM) - Hard game. We all worked hard. They were on top a lot but we saw out the pressure. I scored a good goal and we scored again on the break late on. Good result.
Piers Wixon (CF) - We played well. We should have finished the game earlier than we did. Rode our luck at times but was a result we deserved.
Brad Hunter (CF) - Great result. I think it was a good overall team performance. We worked really hard. Rode our luck at times but looked pretty solid. We could have scored 4 or 5 but we will take 2-0 all day long because I think we deserved it. I think that we are getting harder and harder to beat and are looking after each other as a team. We have got more winners on the pitch.
Adam Marriott (Sub) - Team played well. We absorbed the pressure and broke well. Could have finished off the game earlier but deserved the 2-0 win.
NB.I have tidied up the grammar and translated the "text talk" into English!
For the record, Soham played with both wingers constantly pushed on, with Libam on the right causing particular problems. This was what Kirbs meant by 'cheating'. It was not an accusation of breaking the laws of the game! They also dropped a front man deep and allowed one of their central midfielders to bomb forward at will. We weathered the early storm and scored on the half hour, through a cool finish from Jordan Patrick.
At the interval, Nolan Keeley adjusted the set up of our team to counteract their strengths and we looked to counter attack as the visitors became more desperate for an equaliser. Adam Marriott took one of three chances he had as a second half substitute.
The game lasted 99 minutes and the application, workrate, concentration, discipline and intelligence of the players in carrying out the tactical plan in the second half should be applauded. These players really have come of age.
Only time will tell whether we can maintain these standards until the end of the season and we have another massive test at Dereham Town before returning to face two more top sides in FA Vase semi finalists Needham Market and fourth placed Mildenhall at the Abbey on Wednesday and Saturday next week. However, nothing should detract from this fantastic victory against a team ten points clear at the top of the league, achieved with five first year scholars.
