Swindon-born defender who joined United for an undisclosed fee from Rushden & Diamonds in January 2008, signing a two-and-a-half year contract.

His professional career began as a part-timer in the Conference with Forest Green Rovers before a £35,000 move to League 1 Oxford in December 2000. He spent two seasons there, suffering a relegation to League 2, before joining Chester City, who missed out on promotion from the Conference in the 2003 play-off semi-finals.

Joining League Two side Kidderminster Harriers in October 2003, he became the Harriers captain but they were relegated out of the Football League in 2005. In a cost-cutting exercise he was allowed to join Rushden & Diamonds in January 2006 for an undisclosed fee as they looked to bolster their struggling squad, and although he was unable to avoid a second successive relegation to the Conference, Wayne became a key member of the Diamonds team.

In January 2008 Jimmy Quinn paid to bring him to the U's, and he scored the 2007/08 goal of the season with a 40-yard free kick against former club Forest Green and ended the season by leading the England C side to victory in the Four Nations Tournament.

His form continued into this season as part of a miserly defence and he has also scored four more goals, including two notable ones against rivals Histon, and was deservedly voted 'Player of the Season'.
