A pacy, skilful striker who joined United two games into the season after leaving League Two side Chester City.
Holroyd began his playing career as a schoolboy in Crewe Alexandra's highly-rated youth academy, and after being released he joined Chester City where he he turned professional in 2006 after scoring 21 goals in 28 starts for their youth team.
He made his first team debut the following season (06-07) and made a total of 22 league appearances, most of which were brief sub appearances although he started seven games. Last season he made a further 24 league appearances, scoring four times, but became frustrated at the lack of starting opportunities. After interest during the summer from league sides Stockport County and Bournemouth as well Cambridge United, he agreed a mutual termination of his contract at Chester and joined the U's two weeks later.
