Hitting The 'Net

Posted on: Wed 06 Feb 2008

It never ceases to amaze me how many U's fans all over the world are visiting the club website to follow the fortunes of their favourite football club, and I love to learn of the latest far-flung corner penetrated by the long reach of cambridgeunited.com

Director Paul Barry kindly wrote an article a few weeks ago, explaining how he has used the Internet to follow the U's ever since I first plonked a few hesitant pages on my unofficial website in 1996, and how he now listens to most games via a computer connection in Seattle on the far west coast of the USA.

He's not alone. During each of our games there is an informal gathering of anxious supporters on the message board on the official website as they discuss the line-ups, check the latest score, celebrate our goals, and chew their fingernails whilst tensely awaiting the final whistle.

Taking one recent game as an example, there was a 'roll call' of those logged on and listening to the game online, and the ensuing discussion illustrated just how far flung and varied is our support.

There was Neil in North Bucks, Daniel in Newcastle, Mark in Swansea, Paul in Yeovil, Peter in Chippenham, Wilts, Ross in Glasgow, Dave in Middlesbrough and Tim in the Lake District. And venturing further afield was Steve in Camarillo, California, Risto in Helsinki, Finland, and Tom in Guatemala.

The geographical make up of those readers and listeners varies week by week, but it's great to know there are always U's fans around the world going through every kick and every groan and celebration with those supporters inside the stadium.

If you have a story to share about how the website has kept you in touch with Cambridge United, or another contribution it has made to your support of the club, or maybe you're a long-distance fan who follows the action from afar, please drop me a line on the address below and your story could be included in an upcoming programme and website article.
