Today, 15th September 2007, marks Jimmy Quinn's first year at Cambridge United and he reflects on the last 12 months for cambridgeunited.com.
"When I came in last year the budget had all gone and I had to wait for the January window to make the changes I knew had to be made. I couldn't do it straightaway and I had to use the players I had at my disposal so I knew it was going to be tough, but I always knew this season would be better if I was able to make the improvements and bring in some of the players I wanted.
"That has happened and we've started off very nicely but there's a long way to go. It was very difficult last year, a bit like doing the job with your hands tied behind your back because of the transfer windows, but even when the January window was open it's hard to get people to come to your club when you're down at the bottom of the league and in a dogfight.
"But luckily enough we managed to improve the club with a couple of decent players coming in January like Dan Chillingworth and Dan Gleeson, Robbie Simpson hit a rich vein of form and Chilli weighed in with a few goals, and that was the difference between us maybe going down and staying up.
"Then in the summer I was working very hard with Alan (Lewer) and brought in some decent players who have made a difference. We look a lot more solid at the back, although I think we still need to tighten up in that area because we've given a few soft goals away, although in five of the games we've gone behind and bounced back and showed some character, but I'd definitely like us to keep more clean sheets.
"I think anybody can see the progress there, but it's not just the progress on the field; we're trying to change the image of everything off the field as well and make it a bit more professional.
"It's going along nicely and there's a great atmosphere, and the people working for the club can sense that it's a happier place to work this year. Those people are very important to me and it's completely different, and that's what we've got to try to keep going and stick to the plan."
