Former Cambridge United defender Adam Tann has undergone a successful operation after being diagnosed with testicular cancer last week.
According the website of his present club, Leyton Orient, the 24-year-old was operated on at a Harley Street clinic on Monday to remove the tumour and, due to the early diagnosis, the surgery was successful.
He will know within the next week whether he needs chemotherapy or any other treatment, but as the cancer was caught in its early stages it is hoped that chemotherapy will not be required.
Fans Director Brian Attmore said, "The Supporters, management, players and Board of Cambridge United send their best wishes to Adam at this important time. Our thoughts are very much with you, Adam, and we wish you a speedy recovery to full fitness and health."
Having graduated through the Youth ranks and gained four England Under-18 international caps, he broke into the first team in 2001 as a 17-year-old.
During the next 4 seasons he made a total of 137 starts and 11 sub appearances for the U's, scoring eight goals before his departure at the end of 2005 as United fell into the Conference. Following a brief stint at Notts County, he joined Leyton Orient in January this year and became a key member of their promotion-winning squad.
Attmore added, "Adam has always been held in affection by United supporters. Having followed his progress through the Club, he was one of ours. You were always guaranteed a good performance on the pitch, be it in defence or midfield.
"A model professional and good bloke, we wish him well for the future."
