Newman Joins Cherries

Posted on: Tue 17 Oct 2006

Former U's boss Rob Newman has been appointed assistant manager at League One side AFC Bournemouth.

Rob Newman (c) Joseph TothNewman was contacted by new Cherries boss Kevin Bond over the weekend and after attending training on Monday he was officially named as the new assistant manager this morning.

Newman's reign at the Abbey Stadium ended six weeks ago following the home defeat by Exeter City.

He was manager for just over a year, having joined as assistant manager to Steve Thompson in December 2004, taken charge on a caretaker basis from May 2005 when the club entered administration, and was confirmed as manager two months later in July, with just four players under contract.

Unfortunately a promising end to last season did not carry over into the early stages of this season, although injuries played their part, and after taking just one point from the first six games Newman and assistant Tony Spearing were dismissed by new chairman Lee Power.

We wish Rob every success in his new role.
