Turner Back As Interim Coach

Posted on: Mon 04 Sep 2006

Lee Power and Chris Turner

Former U's manager Chris Turner will assist Chairman Lee Power as interim coach until a new manager is appointed.

Power took over first team affairs on a temporary basis following Friday's dismissal of Rob Newman and Tony Spearing, and will be in charge for the match at Forest Green on Saturday and potentially the home match next Tuesday against Kidderminster.

Today he announced that Turner, who was U's boss between November 1985 and December 1989 and signed many of the players who went on to glory under John Beck in the early 90s, will be in charge of training for the next week.

"Chris is a close friend of mine, he's retired and he was just about to get aboard the QE2 but I managed to drag him off it to help us out for a game or two," Power commented.

"Obviously everyone is aware of Chris' reputation and his C.V. speaks for itself. There aren't many clubs he would come back to help in this situation but obviously he has a soft spot for Cambridge United and I think we're privileged to have him for ten days.

"In the club's current position I don't think think there's anyone better out there, and I only wish he was ten years younger and not getting on these cruises because we wouldn't even have to put the job out there. He would be the man for the job."

Confirming that he regards this as a temporary arrangement, Power continued, "I was asked by the board to come in and keep a bit of continuity at the club. Obviously, with everything that's gone on, we were sitting there waiting for a nice positive start to the season so we're really shocked and disappointed to be in this position.

"I don't want to put Chris under any pressure; Chris has purely come in to help me and his experience is invaluable. It's on a temporary basis and I don't think it's going any further than that. Chris is retired now and hopefully we won't have to call on him again, but it's nice to know that there is someone like Chris here and there might be some involvement further down the line with the football club, where I can call on Chris for experience and maybe in another position.

"We don't want this arrangement to be longer really than two matches because we need to get the club stabilised and get the right person in."

Power added that he has already been impressed with the calibre of applicants for the managerial post, and ideally he would like to be able to introduce the new manager to the players before next Tuesday's home game, but stressed again that the decision will not be rushed (more in later article).
