Cambridge United has today agreed to allow Adam Tann to register for a new club without any initial compensation fee.
Tann, who was the only U's player to be made a formal offer of re-engagement during the Club's period of Administration, rejected a new deal at The Abbey and has been looking to remain with a club in the Football League.
Several months have passed since the expiry of the defender's contract and it has now been agreed to waive the Club's right to compensation, as it was felt that this was becoming a prohibitive factor in Adam finding a new club.
Chairman Roger Hunt said, "Regrettably this situation has continued for far too long and in the interests of Adam's career we have agreed to waive our rights to receive any initial compensation.
"It had reached a stage where neither side benefited from a stalemate and as Adam was a good servant to the Club and an excellent professional, the Board felt it was time for both parties to move on."
Hunt added, "Whilst the transfer market is no longer as buoyant as it used to be, maybe there is something not quite right with the overall process in situations such as Adam's.
"On the other hand there are a large number of players out of work nowadays and finances are so tight in football that clubs are reluctant to pay a fee when they can get a player for nothing.
"I think that this situation should also serve as a warning to players who may be in the same position come the end of this season and who think it's easy to find another Club. Adam was a good player for Cambridge United and he has found it difficult.
"Hopefully, we can now both move on and we wish him well for the future."
23-year-old Tann joined Cambridge United at the age of 13 and progressed through the club's youth scheme, also representing England seven times at Under-18 level.
He made his U's debut in the final game of the 1999/2000 season and became a first team regular with over 140 senior appearances for the club by the end of last season.
