Rob Newman hopes Adam Tann will join Andy Duncan in re-signing for Cambridge United.

Following a pre-season trial with Championship side Reading, 23-year-old Tann recently began training with the United squad to maintain his fitness.

Adam Tann on the ballNewman confirmed that Tann, who came through the youth ranks to establish himself as a popular first team regular for the U's, has been made an offer to stay, but he understands that the versatile defender is ambitious to play at the highest level possible.

"We've offered him something but he hasn't come back to me yet and he's due to train with another club later this week.

"The ball is in his court, but it's a tricky decision for him.

"The offer is there for him to stay, but time is running out and he needs to make a decision about his future."

The squad numbers were announced yesterday and Dave Robertson was listed as number 22. Newman revealed today that the experienced non-league midfielder has signed on a non-contract basis as cover for the squad.

"He's experienced, he's a good character to have around, and he's good enough to do a job when he's needed," he said of the 31-year-old, who was on the same coaching coach as Newman this summer and has played in both central midfield and wide right positions in pre-season.

Finally, asked about reports that former United striker and manager John Taylor has offered his services to Newman free of charge, he responded, "It's a very kind offer from John.

"He's been in touch but I haven't spoken to him about it yet so it wouldn't be fair to comment. It's a kind offer and I have to look at it and what's in the best interests of the club."
