Defender Brett Johnson has today joined Cambridge United on a one-month loan deal from AFC Wimbledon.
The former Northampton and Brentford player, who can operate at either centre-back or left-back, joins as cover in the centre of defence with Michael Wylde and Josh Coulson being sidelined by groin injuries.
Coulson visited a specialist today who confirmed fears that he had sustained a groin tear in Saturday's 2-1 victory at AFC Telford. This means the 22 year-old will require an operation, which has been scheduled for next Thursday.
Johnson, 26, will be available for all our league matches over the next month as well as being eligible for any FA Trophy fixtures and Jez George was pleased to be able to bring in an experienced replacement.
"We are delighted to be able to bring in a player of Brett's calibre and we have to thank Terry Brown at AFC Wimbledon for helping us to make this happen," he said.
"Once our fears were confirmed today that Josh would need an operation it was crucial that we secured a centre back on loan for a month until Michael Wylde can return from his operation.
"We spent the weekend looking at match reports for players who fitted the bill and weren't in their respective squads at the weekend and Brett Johnson was top of our list."
Of Johnson, Jez commented: "He is an experienced player at this level, and higher. Being left sided he gives us a good balance and is an excellent defender. He will train with us tomorrow and go straight into the squad for the weekend.
"Securing the services of Brett is no slight on Rory McAuley or Blaine Hudson but there is no way we could go into a number of important games coming up this month with just two fit centre-backs."
