Jennings Payback for Red

Posted on: Tue 31 Aug 2010

Following his straight red sedning off at Mansfield on Saturday, James Jennings was pleased to feature as part of the U's Bank Holiday win.

"I'll admit I didn't expect to be playing, after watching the DVD from the Mansfield game four or five times we thought there was enough evidence to launch an appeal and hopefully the powers that be will agree with what we know happened. If they see the push I got before I handled the ball then I'll be free to play again on Saturday. "

Speaking of the recent results, Jennings was happy to play a significant part in the win and repaying the team and fans for his red card at the weekend.

"We needed to come out of the traps quickly today and take the game to Eastbourne in the way Crawley did to us a few weeks ago. Josh getting on the end of my corner did that and it galvanized the fans and got them right behind us. As for the free kick I think that goes someway to paying the fans and the lads back for the red card on Saturday. We have been working hard on set pieces in training and it's always good when it comes together on a matchday. I made to shape to put the ball into the far corner and sent the goalkeeper towards that side giving me enough space to place it inside the near post. It's one of those one-in-fifty times that it comes off and that fact that it helped bring us the first win of the season makes it even more special.

"We expected Eastbourne to come back at us after the break and we knew we would need a third to totally kill them off but when it didn't come they put us under a bit of pressure. We kept a good shape at the back and kept them to only a handful of chances and to be fair we could have nicked a couple for ourselves late on.

Looking ahead to Saturday Jennings is confident United can continue the season how the game finished on Monday.

"On paper Saturday should be another game like today's and we should pick up another three points but we know Gateshead will come and battle against us and it won't be easy but we now have the first win under our belts and have to use today to help us push on."
