Following the U's first home win of the season, Eastbourne boss Gary Wilson reflected on his side's defeat.
"The team selection for today was down to the fact we have played five games in fourteen days and there was a lot of tired legs after Saturdays game. We have a squad of players and there is a fine line between all of them and with the few injuries we have we felt we had to change it around a bit."
Looking back on the performance The Sports Manager was disappointed with a booking picked up early in the first half.
"If we hadn't conceded so early we may have been in the game. It was a bit of a shellshock coming from a poorly defended corner and that left us having to come from behind and that was always going to be hard. I thought after the first ten minutes we started to work our way into the game and we put the Cambridge defence under a bit of pressure. We thought from where we were when Steve Brinkhouse went down in the area we could have had a penalty. There was no way it was a booking, I don't know where the referee got that idea from. Steve is lightning quick and perhaps he missed the contact but it was a disappointing reaction from him.
"The second goal owes a bit to the strong wind out here on the pitch and the guy has used that to help him put it in. I think if we had gone in at one-nil we would have had a good chance in the second half because we had a lot of belief and we had a lot of ball in the second half to get back in the game. We put on a second forward after the break and that gave Cambridge something to think about."
Wilson was frustrated with his side being unable to find the net and felt that one goal could have made an impact on the game.
"Andy Atkins had that header midway through the half that the defender on the line did ever so well with. Andy has hit the underside of the bar, Ross Treleaven has followed it up, we've tried to stab it in and I just don't know how Cambridge have kept it out. It may have been a different story if we had got that goal. It would have given us a huge lift and made Cambridge very nervy. But other than that we just didn't have the cutting edge to get the ball home."
Finishing, Wilson praised his side for fitness and remains confident that Eastbourne will continue to perform well this season.
"The way we finished the game pleased me, we needed the boys to run and we had the legs out there. The young players we brought to the club performed well. We felt that was a weapon we could use against Cambridge and I felt we were looking fitter than them at the end of the game. Looking back I've felt that we are a match for most of the teams we have played against and today that was definitely the case."
