Cambridge Fans United will be ten years old this week and will be marking the anniversary by sponsoring Cambridge United's match against Southport at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday 21st August.
Chairman, Dave Matthews-Jones, explained that the Trust has been looking back over what it has achieved in ten years but also looking very much to the future. "When we set up the Trust, back then, the club was in some difficulty and things didn't get better for a while. The sale of the ground, entering administration and the frequent changes in Board members and Chairmen were low points for the club."
"However, we have been able to provide a voice for the club's supporters and, whilst we don't always agree with everything that the club does, we do enjoy a constructive relationship with the staff and Board. There is a long list of things that we have achieved during our first ten years. We thought we would seek out ten things to highlight, as part of our reflections on the past, but it soon became clear that there were many more that we could include."
"We now have a fans elected director on the Board; we are the third largest shareholder at the club; we have started up initiatives such as the South Stand days, the Smile project, the Junior U's scheme; we have run fundraising tournaments for both adults and children; some of our members were key figures in helping the club come out of administration; we were Trust of the Year; we have supported the Youth Development scheme, which has produced young players for the 1st team and a whole host of other fundraising has put money into the club at times when it was in need of it."
"We do recognise that quite a lot of what has been achieved has gone unnoticed, even amongst our own members, at times, and looking to the future, we are planning to relaunch CFU on our anniversary, with a fresh set of clear Aims and Values, so that fans and supporters will know what we stand for and, I hope that they will join us to take the Trust forward."
"There are many challenges ahead, not least the likely move of the football club to a new home, as part of the project being set up by the Abbey Stadium's owners, Grosvenor Developments. We shall be involved in the project group and working to secure a new venue which will be suitable for the club and the fans, both in terms of its facilities and the potential for sustaining a financially viable and growing football club in our community."
"It would be great if, in another 10 years time, we can look back and say that we have achieved something special."
