John Schofield joins Club

Posted on: Wed 28 Jul 2010

Cambridge united are pleased to announce that John Schofield has signed a two year contract with the Club to become first team coach.

Martin Ling told cambridgeunited.com, "John has done an excellent job since he's come in and I feel he's the missing ingredient we've been looking for to make the first team coaching unit stronger.

"This allows both myself and Paul Carden to concentrate on the areas we need to; Paul on his playing alongside his coaching and for myself managing alongside my coaching."

Martin went on, "John is a highly qualified coach with a Uefa Pro Licence and there are only 150 people in the English game with this licence, including myself. I'm sure that with this experience and quality within the building Cambridge United is in strong hands with the management and coaching unit of myself, John and Paul."

Schofield launched his career as head of youth development at Lincoln City ten years ago and moved on to become the first-team coach and then manager. He has also been assistant manager at Cheltenham recently.

U's Director of Football Jez George added, "John fits perfectly with the ethos of the Club. As well as his responsibilities for coaching the first team, John will also work with Nolan Keeley with our development players to ensure the continued smooth pathway from the scholars to the first team.

"The board have recognised the importance of building the right infrastructure around the first team. We now have Simon Brown undertaking the role of goalkeeping coach, Core Cambridge looking after the strength and conditioning programme, the same permanent training facility for the scholars and first team and with the addition of John to the coaching staff, the final piece of the jigsaw is now in place."
