McAuley Undergoes Knee Surgery

Posted on: Thu 15 Jul 2010

Cambridge United manager Martin Ling has spoken exclusively to cambridgeunited.com this afternoon, revealing that U's midfielder Rory McAuley has undergone knee surgery and will be out of action for the next 4-6 weeks.

Martin told the website, "Rory felt his knee last week in training, Greg assessed it and felt there may be a problem.

"He was referred to our Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Dennis Edwards, who yesterday after going in with a camera to Rory's knee assessed and repaired the damage of a slight cartilage tear.

"The recovery time for an injury of this nature is 4-6 weeks so he'll miss the first few weeks of the season. Rory being a young and determined man will try to be back as quickly as possible.

"The three areas Rory can play are central midfield, right back and centre-half. For the timescale he'll be out I don't feel we need any added cover in these areas."

Going on to speak on the arrival of Wayne Gray to the Club on trial, Martin explained, "Wayne is a player I know well, having him for two seasons whilst at Leyton Orient.

"He had a disappointed season last year with injuries and had a bad knee injury whilst with me at Orient. The importance for me is on him proving he's still got the ability he had prior to his injuries.

Looking ahead to Saturday's game at St Ives, the first friendly of the season, Martin added, "On Saturday at St Ives there will be six players with first team experience in an under 20's squad. On the Wednesday at Mildenhall every player will be involved trying to get all members of the squad at least 45 minutes of action."

Turning his attention to the current pre-season preperation, Martin explained, "Pre season is going really well, with the strength and conditioning support from Core Cambridge working alongside the six week programme that the coaching staff have put together to make sure the players are fully fit and raring to go against Wrexham on 14th August.

"Credit goes to the players for following the off season program allowing us to put the workload into the players at the levels we expected."
