Cambridge United have fought off competition to sign former Forest Green striker Conal Platt.
The 23-year old who put pen to paper today spent part of his career at Liverpool, featuring regularly for their youth team and Liverpool Reserves. Previous clubs also include Bournemouth and Weymouth, as well as loan spells at Morecambe and Rushden & Diamonds.
Platt was offered a new deal by Forest Green and was also linked with moves to fellow Blue Square Bet Premier clubs Mansfield, Wrexham and 2009/10 season runners up York City.
Speaking exclusively to cambridgeunited.com, Platt said "I'm happy to be at Cambridge. This is a big club, so that was an attractive feature for me. Where I've had talks with Martin it's been good to hear what his ambitions for the season are. My agent also used to be a player here so learning of his experiences has helped me to choose Cambridge. I can't wait to get started for the new season."
Martin Ling said "after an extensive search for a wide left player I am delighted to get Conal into the building. It's a position that is very difficult to come by but I think he gives great balance and with Dave Partridge, Conal Platt and James Jennings we now have three left footed players in the mix. He's a player that will excite the crowd being able to go on the outside of defenders and is also able to get goals from wide areas. I am delighted to have him in the squad."
Conal joins the U's on a two year contract and has been allocated squad number 14.
