Mills: "We're Struggling to Put the Ball in the Net"

Posted on: Thu 25 Mar 2010

The Lambs boss Gary Mills spoke exclusively to cambridgeunited.com following his team's defeat to the U's courtesy of top goal scorer Danny Crow.

The number one in charge at Tamworth was disappointed to see his team suffer a 2-0 defeat on Wednesday evening despite holding second place Oxford to a draw the previous weekend.

"I thought we played well at Mansfield a couple of weeks ago and well on Sunday against Oxford in a similar way that we played in the first 45 minutes tonight. It's taken a mistake to let you in tonight. My skipper has allowed you the chance to score the opener and that left us with some questions to be answered and we didn't do it, which has disappointed me.

"We are struggling at the moment to put the ball into the net but we have been solid. So what you do if you are struggling to score is to make sure the opposition don't. We've given two goals away tonight and it has cost us."

Mills conveyed his opinion that the visiting side's decision making played a role in the result but praised his players for previous performances.

"Danny Crow is the player on form for you at the moment so the last thing we needed to do was to give him a chance. Credit to him, he put them away well. But I look at my players and it's all about decision-making and if you make the mistakes that we did tonight at this level you will concede goals.

"Saying that my players from day one this season have been fantastic and I hate to keep repeating myself but we are a small, small club and we have given frights to some of the big names in this division. My players have been magnificent, so it's not all about tonight. Yes we are disappointed, we don't like to lose football matches but it's about the whole season.

"Like you we have lost six points and have been dragged into the relegation battle. We don't have the luxury to bring in the standard of players that you have. That's not making excuses we know our strengths and we now have to show a bit of character. We'll do that in the seven games we have left and will aim to get enough goals and points to keep us coming back to grounds like this next season."
