LOAN SWAP: Pitt for Russell

Posted on: Fri 22 Jan 2010

Cambridge United have agreed a deal with fellow Conference side York City for the loan-exchange of winger Courtney Pitt.

Pitt will leave the R Costings Abbey Stadium on loan until the end of the season, with versatile 24-year-old midfielder Simon Russell joining the U's on the same terms.

Pitt arrived at the Abbey in 2006 and has gone on to make 145 starts for the U's, scoring 16 goals since that time and is currently the longest-serving member of the first team squad.

Manager Martin Ling told cambridgeunited.com, "Courtney has been a great servant to Cambridge United but isn't in my plans for the future. This deal has given me the opportunity again to shuffle the pack and freshen things up.

"Simon is a versatile player who can play on either wing or as part of the midfield three. He is a good technical footballer and  will be here with us until the end of the season to prove he is worthy of a contract beyond that, and Courtney will be doing the same at York."

Russell began his career as a trainee at Hull City, making his first team debut for them after coming on as a substitute in a Football League Trophy match in 2002.

He joined Kidderminster Harriers in 2003 where he stayed until joining York City on a free transfer in the summer of 2008. He was on loan at fellow Conference side Tamworth this season and has made a total of 188 appearances in his career, scoring 15 goals.

Neither players are available for selection for the match between the two sides at the R Costings Abbey Stadium tomorrow. Simon has been allocated squad number 17.
