Tonkin Oxford Bound

Posted on: Tue 05 Jan 2010

Anthony Tonkin has left Cambridge United Football Club for an undisclosed fee to join title favourites Oxford United.

The former England C international joined the U's in July 2008 and has made 70 appearances for the U's during this time, scoring one goal which came this season against York City in the FA Cup.

U's Director of Football Jez George explains, "Anthony Tonkin is desperate to get back playing in the football league as soon as possible. Being out of contract at the end of the season he could have left for no fee during the summer.

"At 30 years of age he felt this was an opportunity too good to turn down at this stage of his career. Although we are all sad to see him go, it's a move in the best interests of everybody concerned.

"We have been in negotiation with Oxford for a period of time and feel we have secured a reasonable fee in the circumstances. Martin Ling has already identified a replacement which we expect to sign next week."

Jez added. "Martin is operating under budget restrictions and we are all working constantly behind the scenes to protect the opportunity of developing the squad for the current and coming seasons".
