Goalkeepers Struck by Virus

Posted on: Thu 10 Dec 2009

Cambridge United could face a goalkeeping crisis for Saturday's FA Trophy match at home to Luton Town [ticket details].

Danny Potter was sent home from training today (Thursday) with sore eyes and the flu-like symptoms that have affected many of the squad in the last two weeks, while back-up keeper Laurie Walker is also ill and missed training.

Manager Martin Ling developed some of the same symptoms yesterday so stayed away from training today, and assistant Paul Carden confirmed he has warned Director of Football Jez George that an emergency loan may be needed if both goalkeepers are still suffering tomorrow.

"I've already spoken to Jez at the training ground to warn him but hopefully it won't come to that," he said. "Danny missed some training through being ill last week so he felt he ought to come in today, but he wasn't looking good at all and we sent him back home."

On the positive side, full-backs Dan Gleeson and Anthony Tonkin are both training after recovering from a calf injury and the virus respectively.

Gleeson has come through training well and will be available for selection on Saturday, while Tonkin will be assessed tomorrow after training, having missed the last two games through illness.
